TOOTOO

Directed by Michael Hamilton | 2025 | 90 mins | Canada

2026 Edmonton Film Prize finalist!

Jordin John Kudluk Tootoo, of Inuit and Ukrainian descent, forged his path to the NHL and defied the odds in more than one way. Raised in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Tootoo learned a traditional Inuit lifestyle, including hunting, fishing, and camping. Despite facing mental and physical abuse as a child, Tootoo became both the first Inuk player and the first player to grow up in Nunavut to play for Team Canada and in the NHL.

During his time in the NHL, Tootoo quickly became regarded as one of the league's best agitators. Though Tootoo enjoyed success in the league, unresolved trauma in his life manifested in a struggle with alcohol. Midway through his decade-long career, Tootoo voluntarily entered the league's substance abuse program to receive treatment and get his life back on track. Now, in addition to his on-ice skills, Tootoo is known for his charity and community outreach, with a focus on giving back to Indigenous communities, especially in the North.

Tootoo has defined his life by so much more than hockey. His story transcends sports. It is about a hero facing overwhelming adversity, beating the odds, coming to the brink of catastrophe, and pulling the pieces back together to become more than he once was—a true hero's journey from the unlikely hometown of Rankin Inlet.
